Single-furrow, two-furrow or reversible
A single-furrow plough has one share: it needs less power and suits lower-horsepower tractors and difficult ground best. A two-furrow plough turns a wider strip on every pass, but needs more power. A reversible plough flips the share over at the headland and always throws the soil to the same side: the ground stays flatter, with no open furrows in the middle of the field.
Power and soil
The harder the ground and the more furrows working at once, the more power you need. On heavy land, four-wheel drive and front weights help.
Tractor width and side offset
The plough should cut its furrow roughly in line with the tractor's rear right-hand wheel: if it works too far inside the track width, the furrow ends up under the tractor and the job isn't done properly. That's why the plough body can be moved left and right on the three-point linkage, so it suits tractors of different widths. Pitch and depth are then set with the lower links and the top link.
Frequently asked questions
Which plough for a 20 hp tractor?
One whose recommended horsepower range includes 20 hp, usually a single-furrow plough. Check the linkage category and lower link spacing too.
What's the difference between a standard plough and a reversible plough?
A reversible plough flips over at the headland and always throws the soil to the same side, leaving the ground flatter.
Will the plough suit the width of my tractor?
The furrow should fall roughly in line with the rear right-hand wheel. The plough body moves left and right on the three-point linkage, so it adapts to different track widths: if in doubt, tell us your tractor model and track width and we'll recommend the right plough.
How much horsepower do I need?
From 12 to 40 hp, depending on the model: the lightest single-furrow ploughs start at 12 hp, while two-furrow and heavier models need more power. The exact figure is on every listing.
How deep does it plough?
It's on every listing and is set with the lower links and the top link to suit the ground; on two-furrow ploughs, also with the height of each body.
